Value of a College Internship After College

By Beth Ibarra  Many college students entering the job market for the first time often overlook work experience as being a valuable asset to their application and resume. They have been told that their degree will take them farther than anything else ever could. What they will quickly discover, however, is that many employers are looking for something other than the traditional 'go to class and get good grades' mold that many students fit. What many employers love to see is that the student participated in some kind of college internship during their time studying at a college or university. This will add to the knowledge and experiences the student takes away from studying in college. Many students overlook this vitally important aspect of college life and it is very unfortunate that they do so. What may matter the most while in college is the experiences and learning opportunities that students find. These opportunities often surface outside of the classroom in part time jobs, full time jobs or in a college internship. The experiences that students find will vary greatly depending on the type of internship, the geographic location of the internship and the nature of the company offering the internship. Students do not necessarily have to find an internship that corresponds directly to their desired field of study or their future employment plans. Each internship offers something uniquely different from all the others, so students should take advantage of whatever unique opportunity presents itself. Students should be thrilled to find an internship that allows them some kind of freedom to make their own opportunities and find their own work, while still earning money for tuition or books or living expenses. A college internship will look great on a resume. Many students find that having some real world experience to speak of in an interview will increase their chances of being hired, and this is usually the case. Employers get tired of seeing the same mundane applicants that did not partake in any social activities, intramural sports, clubs or jobs or internships while in college. Many students waste their college experience by spending the majority of it in their dorm and in the classroom. This can be extremely limiting to the student's growth both academically and personally. Employers see students participating in a college internship as ones that will take imitative in their life. They may see these students as ones that will not sit idly by on the sidelines of their company, but will jump in and really make a difference and make their presence known both within the company and externally with their clients or customers. Many students eventually find their way while in college. It may take several semesters or years for them to decide on a future career or even a major, but many students somehow figure it out. Having an internship to help them get some real world experience and perhaps figure out what they do or do not enjoy in life can help to expedite the process. The more time the student has to prepare for their future the better, and the more opportunities to learn and grow, the more well-rounded of a person and job applicant they will be upon graduation.
